SFM Announces Scholarship Winners for 2012

For the eighth year now, Sound Family Medicine has awarded scholarships to local high school students. All recipients are patients of Sound Family Medicine, and special consideration was given to those applicants planning to pursue a career in a healthcare-related field. This year we have found five worthy high school seniors. Molly Colvin from Bonney Lake High School, Austin Meyers from Emerald Ridge High School, Samantha Voecks from Puyallup High School, Lauren Higgins from Rogers High School, and Marcus VanScoyoc from Graham-Kapowsin High School received scholarships at their high schools’ awards ceremonies. We attended these ceremonies in order to see the many special young adults, ready to go forth on their own as college freshmen this fall. Each scholarship recipient is an excellent student who is extremely involved in our community. In addition to the local high school seniors that were selected, we also awarded two SFM employees, Aurelia Hilts and Abbey Weymouth, with scholarships for continuing their education.

Molly Colvin

molly colvin Molly will be attending Pierce College in the fall, where she will study nursing, as she works toward her goal of becoming a registered nurse. While attending Bonney Lake High School, Molly gave back to her community by fundraising for the Susan G. Komen fund, participating in the Medical Explorers program, and volunteering at a mental health facility. Molly says her own extensive experience as a patient in the hospital has created her drive and passion to enter the medical field and care for others.

Austin Meyers

austin Austin will be attending the University of Washington in the fall, where he will major in biology, as he works toward his goal of becoming a hospitalist. While attending Emerald Ridge High School, Austin was a member of DECA and the cross country team, and he was also chosen to represent his school in the Daffodil Festival. He gave back to his community by participating in Boy Scouts and holding leadership positions within his church. Austin says the sudden loss of his father has given him the drive needed to pursue a career in the medical field.

Samantha Voecks

samantha Samantha will be attending Washington State University in the fall, where she will major in nursing as she works toward her dream of becoming a registered nurse and serving patients in her community. While attending Puyallup High School, Samantha was a member of the soccer team, and she volunteered in a leadership role at her church. Samantha says she learned, at an early age, the importance of helping others, and illnesses within her own family have inspired her to become a nurse.

Lauren Higgins

lauren Lauren will be attending Pacific Lutheran University in the fall. There, she will major in biology as she works toward her goal of becoming a dentist and owning her own practice. While attending Rogers High School, Lauren was captain of both the school’s soccer team and her club’s team. She also gave back to her community by volunteering with Gift Makers and participating in youth soccer programs. Lauren says that her rewarding experiences mentoring young athletes have made her realize that she wants to work with children throughout her career.

Marcus VanScoyoc

marcus vanscoyoc Marcus will be attending Central Washington University in the fall, where he will play football and major in business, as he works toward his goal of becoming an entrepreneur. While attending Graham-Kapowsin High School, Marcus was a member of the football and basketball teams, and he volunteered at the Washington Soldiers Home, assisting disabled veterans. Marcus believes that in order to make your dreams become reality, you must work hard and be dedicated.

Aurelia Hilts

Aurelia is a medical assistant and has been serving the patients of Sound Family Medicine since May 2008. She is currently enrolled at Clover Park Technical College and is studying to obtain her Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate. While Aurelia says she loves being a medical assistant, she would love to expand her scope of practice by becoming a LPN. Not only is Aurelia dedicated to her patients at SFM, but she is also committed to her community, volunteering her time with the YWCA and the March of Dimes.

Abbey Weymouth

Abbey works within the quality improvement department as a project coordinator, and (including a short absence) has been serving in several positions at SFM since November 2005. She is currently enrolled at City University and is studying to obtain her Bachelors of Business Administration with a focus on Project Management. Abbey enjoys her role in the QI department and has a desire to not only gain experience in her position, but to also obtain the educational background that will further develop her skills. In addition to several volunteer positions held within SFM, Abbey also volunteers at her church where she teaches Sunday School to elementary school children. Please join us in congratulating these students on their achievements. We look forward to seeing how they will shape the future of their communities.
