Meet our 2017 Scholarship Winners

2017 marks our 13th year awarding scholarships to future leaders in healthcare right here in our community. Our organization’s roots run deep in Puyallup and Bonney Lake which makes getting to know these local students even more special. Sound Family Medicine had the honor of awarding five $1,000 scholarships to local seniors this year.

Criteria for the Sound Family Medicine scholarship includes the ability to demonstrate strong academic performance, a commitment to community and the desire to pursue a career in the healthcare industry. We received stacks of applications full of impressive transcripts, long lists of extracurricular activities, hundreds of hours of community service, letters of recommendation and heartfelt essays from the students. We were blown away!

It took our team several days to read all the materials which took us on a journey where we truly felt that we go to know these young adults. In the end, there were 5 high school seniors who we felt would make a positive difference in our community with the education they will soon earn. It is our privilege to introduce to you our 2017 scholarship winners!

Holden Swanbeck, Bonney Lake High School

Not only has Holden excelled academically and nearly earned his Eagle Scout, he has volunteered more than 300 hours in our community while holding a job. In his application, he explained his desire to set a positive example for his younger brother and we certainly believe that he has. He also shared how much joy it brings him to do things for others that put a smile on their face.

Yadira D., Sumner High School

Yadira has earned an impressive GPA and volunteered more than 100 hours in our community all while holding a job. In one of her letters of recommendation she was described as “while outstanding in the classroom, Yadira is most proud of the work she has done for the community.” Yadira consistently demonstrates perseverance, dedication and focus in her actions. She will be pursuing a career in pediatric nursing because she wants to help children find joy when they’re sick.

Her dedication to her academics has earned her a 3.98 GPA while also holding leadership roles in ASB, HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and as a group leader at church. She volunteers in her community through Key & Interact, Tacoma Youth Symphony and served abroad with a mission trip.
