Sound Family Medicine By the Decades

Sound Family Medicine

Sound Family Medicine celebrates its 34th birthday this August, and to celebrate, we’re taking you back to the past to see how SFM has grown over the past three decades. We’re flashing back to our 4th, 14th, and 24th anniversary to give you a glimpse of how we’ve grown.

1988 – Four Years of South Hill Family Medicine

In 1988, Sound Family Medicine wasn’t Sound Family Medicine! Our original name was South Hill Family Medicine and we had one clinic location which opened in 1986, our Puyallup 10th Street clinic, known then as Hartland. During these first four years, there were 10 people on staff including Dr. Sullivan, Dr. Young, Dr. Pullen, Dr. Utt, and Dr. Jackson. Below are some of the ads and articles featured in the Tacoma News Tribune about South Hill Family Medicine.

1998 – Fourteen Years of South Hill Family Medicine

As our practice grew, so did our number of providers. During this decade Dr. Donald Sinden, Dr. Nancy Grubb and James Gee, PA joined the family. In 1994, South Hill Family Medicine celebrated its 10th anniversary and in 1996, our Puyallup 10th Street clinic celebrated its 10th birthday as well.

2008 – Twenty-Four Years of Sound Family Medicine

This was a big decade for us, full of changes! In 2002 we opened our Bonney Lake clinic and officially changed our name to Sound Family Medicine to commemorate. In 2004, we opened our Sunrise clinic, and in 2008, we opened our Bonney Lake walk-in and our Puyallup 31st Ave clinic.  We also became more involved in our community, participating in Sumner’s Relay for Life for the first time in 2000 and beginning our annual scholarship fund in 2004. Some of our current providers who joined during this decade are Dr. Kevin Taggart, Dr. Marc Aversa, Dr. Darin Blackburn, Dr. Sean Stout, Dr. Nancy McDonald, Cyndi Desmond, ARNP. Our CEO, Denise Martel joined the Sound family in 2003, making 2018 her fifteenth year here.

2018 – Thirty-Four Years of Sound Family Medicine

As we enter our thirty-fourth year, Sound Family Medicine continues to be recognized as an outstanding family practice. Our providers have been awarded numerous accolades like the Patients’ Choice Award, for Compassionate Doctor Recognition and the On-time Doctor Award. Sound Family Medicine was awarded “Best of 2015” for family healthcare services and “Best of 2016” for pediatric healthcare services. In 2015, Dr. Pullen, our longest standing provider, celebrated 28 years with Sound Family and retired later that year. In 2017, Sound Family Medicine providers delivered 2,371 babies, our largest number yet!

As our practice grows, we hope to continue to provide the same excellent, comprehensive and compassionate care to you, our patients, in the decades to come. To our longstanding patients, thank you for being with us every step of the way, and to our newer patients, we thank you for joining our family.
