Avian Flu Update

There has been a great deal of publicity and concern about the avian flu recently. This is a strain of influenza that is primarily found in wild birds, and has caused severe cases of influenza in a very few humans. The widespread concern stems from two facts:
First it is possible that this virus could mutate (change slightly genetically) into a form that could easily spread from human to human, like typical human influenza strains of influenza. Second that the cases which have occurred in humans have been unusually severe, with a high death rate, and that the genetic makeup of the avian flu is similar to the genetic makeup of the last major influenza pandemic in 1918-1919 where millions of people died worldwide. It is important to understand that so far there have been no cases in North America, and that there has been no major outbreak in humans. This disease, its progress, and the response of governments of developed nations worldwide will make fascinating reading, and we will try to keep you informed.

Rather than try to explain this in detail I will refer you to an excellent US Government sponsored web site for more information.
