My Life is Too Busy - How Can I Get Healthy?

We all lead very busy lives, and sometimes it seems like there is no way to fit in traditional exercise classes or routines. Even some small adjustments can make positive changes.

Seek ways to be active! If you work in an office, take periodic breaks in your day to walk around the building, get some water or just stand up and move. If you are shopping, park further away from the entrance so you can get in a few extra steps. If you are watching TV at home, do something active during the commercials.

Drink more water! People often confuse thirst with hunger. Drink lots of water - not caffeinated drinks or juices. Eat fruits and vegetables, which contain 80-90% water by weight. These are good ways to help stay hydrated and avoid overeating.

Set clear goals! It's said that 40-45% of Americans make New Year's Resolutions. The nature of making goals shows that you have acknowledged the need for growth or change in an area of your life. Setting goals is the first step toward effective change. Share your goals with people in your life who can help support you and hold you accountable.

Make exercise a social activity! Join a gym with a friend. Go for walks after dinner with your family. Take the kids to go swimming, hiking or biking. Research shows that exercise adherence occurs when people can engage in activity with someone they care about.

Have fun! Don't force yourself to use a treadmill if you don't like treadmills. Instead, find something that works for you by considering what you like to do. If you like to dance, sign up for a dance class or get a DVD. Love the water? Try swimming or kayaking. Love sports? Sign up for a recreational sports league.

Finally, always remember that wellness is a positive lifestyle change that you can choose for yourself and your family. Change can be difficult, but it will have great results!
